Why can’t you withdraw crypto after buying? Holds, limits and reviews

Tell payment holds, security delays, reserved balances, rolling limits and manual reviews apart, then use timing examples to decide what to check next.

On this page

A purchase can be completed and visible in your balance while the available withdrawal amount remains zero or lower than the total. First identify whether the message concerns a particular amount, address, network or the whole account. The next action depends on that distinction. Repeated trading or changing the destination does not replace the required account process.

This guide reviews public Kraken, Binance and OKX documentation on 6 September 2026, Beijing time. Time periods below have specific triggers; they are not universal rules for all regions or payment methods. We have not accessed or unlocked an account, and leveraged positions are outside this guide.

Use the message to identify the category

Message or symptom What to investigate Information to find
Withheld funds or a remaining waiting time A payment-method hold Affected purchase/deposit, amount and end time
Withdrawal disabled after changing security settings A security delay Change record, scope and timing in the notice
A balance is visible but the available amount is too small Open-order reservations or a partial hold Available balance, orders and account location
A 24-hour limit has been reached Insufficient remaining allowance Unit, remaining capacity and prior withdrawal times
A specific asset/network is suspended Wallet maintenance or network status Notice for that asset, chain and direction
More documents requested or review in progress A manual or compliance review Account notice, ticket and required information

Keep the original message. This table helps locate the relevant process; it is not a diagnosis of your account.

You can trade, but cannot withdraw

Kraken's hold explanation describes how some card or digital-wallet purchases may trigger a 72-hour hold. The affected value generally corresponds to the purchase, and trading can remain available. Payment method, account history and region can affect the outcome.

A separate, specific example appears in its cash-deposit table: US ACH through Plaid has a seven-day withdrawal hold. That is not an Australian PayID rule. Equally, a table showing no standard hold for a funding method does not rule out a separate account-security restriction.

Buying a different asset need not remove a hold on equivalent funds. If you expect to transfer soon, check withdrawal availability before paying. Fast execution and immediate transferability are different properties.

Why might a 200 balance leave only 70 available?

Consider this fictional USDT breakdown: 200 total, with 80 held and a separate, non-overlapping 50 reserved by an unfilled order. With no other restriction, 200 − 80 − 50 = 70 USDT remains before withdrawal charges.

Component Amount Can it be treated as withdrawable?
Total balance 200 USDT No; it includes held and reserved funds
Payment hold 80 USDT Wait for the corresponding condition
Open-order reservation 50 USDT Decide whether to keep the order
Other available funds 70 USDT Still check fees, minimums and limits

Do not subtract the same funds twice if multiple reasons overlap. This example explicitly assumes separate portions. Read the platform's available amount for the real calculation. Kraken's fund-withdrawal help also distinguishes a total portfolio valuation from holdings in a specific currency.

When does the security waiting period start?

Binance's reactivation guide describes 24-to-48-hour suspensions after certain security actions. OKX's restriction guide describes a 24-hour restriction on withdrawals and P2P selling after relevant security changes. These explain their respective mechanisms; they do not establish regional account eligibility.

If your account explicitly states a 24-hour delay starting at 14:00 on 6 September, the corresponding time is 14:00 on 7 September in the same timezone, not midnight. This is arithmetic only: use your account's countdown and subsequent notices for the actual endpoint.

Repeated password resets, removing authentication or disabling protection is not a way to accelerate withdrawal. If the security change was not yours, secure the account through the platform and contact support first.

Limits, reserved funds and suspended networks need different actions

For limits, inspect the measurement window. Identify the denomination and distinguish the per-transaction maximum, cumulative ceiling and current allowance. A 24-hour window is not necessarily a calendar day. Where a rolling window applies, capacity used in separate transactions may return at different times.

For reserved funds, inspect orders. Review whether you still intend to keep an open order before cancelling it to release funds. Another sub-account's holdings, or a portfolio value after conversion into another asset, is not the available quantity of the asset you are withdrawing.

For network suspension, inspect direction. Deposits, withdrawals and trading have separate states. If the selected withdrawal network is unavailable, do not switch to a chain the receiver cannot use. Recheck both endpoints; waiting for restoration is also an option.

What if there is a TxID or a request for documents?

If a TxID exists, find out whether the transaction has been broadcast. Once it is awaiting blockchain confirmations, follow a sending-platform, chain and receiving-platform investigation, rather than treating it as a disabled withdrawal button.

The OKX deposit-progress guide distinguishes crediting confirmations from withdrawal-unlock requirements. A credited deposit need not unlock every subsequent function immediately. Check that deposit's record, not another asset's confirmation count.

If the platform requests identity, payment-source or transaction information, follow the notice inside your account. Kraken's On Hold article distinguishes automatic waiting from cases requiring support. This site cannot assign a universal completion time to a manual review. Ask for progress if an indicated time has passed; provide specifically requested material when there is an outstanding requirement.

Give support these six pieces of context

  1. The operation: a first withdrawal after a purchase, a network transfer or a cash withdrawal.
  2. The exact account message and time it appeared, shared only through official support.
  3. Asset, amount and held quantity, distinguishing total and available balances.
  4. Related funding, purchase or security-change records and order numbers.
  5. TxID, chain and receiving status if already broadcast.
  6. The existing ticket number, to keep the context together.

For example: “After a card purchase on 6 September, my account shows 200 USDT, of which 80 is withheld. There is no TxID. The displayed end time is … Is any further information required?” Those figures are illustrative; use your own records in a real request.

Can an extra payment remove the restriction early?

Do not send money to an outside address advertised in an unsolicited message as an unlocking fee. A timed hold, manual review and blockchain charge are different processes. An additional payment does not automatically remove a timed hold or manual review. Kraken's funds guide explicitly says support cannot bypass a time-based hold.

Should I still check fees after a hold expires?

Yes. Read the final charge, net arrival and receiving minimum before transferring. The full-cost guide separates purchasing, trading and withdrawal costs. A restriction ending does not verify the destination address or certify a transfer as safe.
