Kraken's instant purchases use a confirmed quote; Kraken Pro spot trades execute against an order book. Their cost structures differ. Kraken+ is a separate subscription, not an upgrade that removes Pro spot fees. Identify the purchase interface before comparing how much crypto the same total spending delivers.
Official public sources were checked on 6 September 2026, Beijing time. This guide covers unleveraged crypto purchases and spot order books only. Published rates have defined scopes; the BTC prices and orders below are fictional. We did not log in, subscribe or execute trades.
Three names, three different roles
| Product or entry point | How you buy | Costs to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Kraken Buy / Sell / Convert | Accept the displayed purchase quote | Displayed trading fee, embedded spread and payment costs |
| Kraken Pro Spot | Choose a pair, order type and amount; execute on the book | Execution price plus your maker/taker fee tier |
| Kraken+ | Subscription benefits for selected Kraken purchases | Eligible trading-fee waivers, subscription cost and excluded charges |
Kraken's fee overview separates buying, trading and funding costs. Its Kraken+ benefits guide excludes Pro. An ordinary Kraken account has no opening or maintenance fee; a subscription is not a mandatory account charge.
Kraken instant purchase
Check the trading fee, quoted spread and payment charge separately; membership waivers have limits.
Kraken Pro spot
Check funding costs separately; equal budgets do not guarantee equal execution prices.
Pro spot rates do not price instant purchases. A trading-fee waiver does not automatically remove spreads, payment charges or withdrawal fees.
What the published percentages cover
The general and Australian public schedules showed these ordinary product rates during this review. Stablecoin, FX, special-pair and personal-discount schedules are separate.
| Published product | Rate observed | What remains outside that percentage? |
|---|---|---|
| Instant and recurring purchases | 1% trading fee | Embedded spread and potential payment charges |
| Kraken Custom orders | 1.5% trading fee | This is not a Pro limit order; check its quote |
| Pro Spot Crypto, Tier 1 | Maker 0.40%; taker 0.80% | Funding, order-book pricing/slippage and withdrawals |
Sources: Kraken fee schedule and Australian schedule. Check the entity, pair and current account tier rather than assigning a rate from the app name alone.
Custom orders and Pro limit orders can both involve price conditions, but their fee schedules are not interchangeable. See why a limit order can still be a taker.
Why not use the old 0.25% / 0.40% rates?
Kraken's July 2026 tier-change notice lists 0.40% / 0.80% for the new Tier 1. It also excludes Instant Buy purchases from Pro spot trading volume. Eligible spot activity or assets on-platform can affect the tier; the example does not require adding trades or holdings to qualify.
Our new read of the official BTC/AUD public market API still returned an older zero-volume row of 0.25% maker and 0.40% taker. That conflicts with the newer website. We explicitly use the newer website as a conditional illustration, not the lower API values as a promised personal rate. Check your account's fee and actual fills before relying on either.
A smaller fee does not guarantee a lower purchase price
An instant quote can contain a spread relative to a reference market price. It affects the unit purchase price without necessarily appearing as a separate fee. Amount and timing can change the quote. Instant-buy FAQ
Pro order books also have bid/ask spreads. A market order may fill at several price levels, and the last chart price does not guarantee your next execution. Compare the estimated or actual average price for the whole order. Kraken's trading glossary
Limit orders control acceptable prices but may fill partially or not at all. Post only prevents an immediate taker execution; it does not guarantee a fill. An unfilled low-fee order is not a completed cheap purchase when you need BTC now. Limit prices and Post only
Recalculate net BTC from the same AUD 1,000 budget
This is a fictional teaching example, not a live Kraken quote. To isolate purchasing, assume AUD 1,000 is already in the account. There are no extra payment, FX or withdrawal charges and no Kraken+ membership. Every order fills completely; fees are assumed to apply to trade notional and be paid additionally in AUD. Per-fill rounding is ignored.
For budget B, fee rate f and price P: trade notional = B ÷ (1 + f); BTC = notional ÷ P. This leaves room for the fee within the budget. If a real confirmation uses a different settlement method, use its net received amount instead.
| Assumption | Instant Buy | Pro taker | Pro maker |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fictional quote/average price, AUD per BTC | 151,000, including quote spread | 149,500 | 149,400, assuming eventual full fill |
| Conditional fee rate | 1% | 0.80% | 0.40% |
| Trade notional | AUD 990.10 | AUD 992.06 | AUD 996.02 |
| AUD trading fee | 9.90 | 7.94 | 3.98 |
| Total spending | AUD 1,000 | AUD 1,000 | AUD 1,000 |
| Approximate net BTC | 0.00655695 | 0.00663588 | 0.00666677 |
For the taker column: 1,000 ÷ 1.008 ÷ 149,500 ≈ 0.00663588 BTC. Pro receives more in these assumptions because of both the fee and the prices we chose. The example does not establish that Pro is cheaper for every order.
Changing the instant trading fee to zero at the same fictional 151,000 quote gives about 0.00662252 BTC. That still does not exceed the table's Pro taker result. This isolates why “zero trading fee” does not mean “most crypto”; it excludes subscription cost and is not a member quote.
Kraken's trading-fee explanation says a fee-currency preference is not guaranteed. Reconcile both the AUD balance change and BTC received after execution; our AUD settlement assumption is not a universal rule.
Value Kraken+ using benefits you will actually use
Eligible buying, selling and conversion fees on Kraken can be waived; Pro spot is excluded, while spread and card-processing charges remain. The fee schedule states a monthly USD 10,000 or local-equivalent allowance, whereas parts of the subscription FAQ describe “10K” in major currencies. Do not assume a universal AUD 10,000 limit: check the unit and remaining allowance in your own subscription page. Fee schedule · Subscription FAQ
A useful calculation is fees actually waived during the period minus subscription spending for that period. Suppose a subscription costs AUD 5 and eligible purchases total AUD 400 with a waivable 1% fee. The AUD 4 saving does not cover that AUD 5 cost. AUD 5 is an invented teaching figure, not official pricing. Count eligible buys and sells separately; exclude volume beyond the allowance or outside the supported products.
That calculation compares the same instant-buy route with and without membership. A comparison against Pro must also include different quotes, funding costs and execution outcomes. Additional trades just to make a subscription seem worthwhile do not create a saving.
Check the billing channel too. The FAQ currently describes annual-only web subscriptions and monthly/yearly app options. Cancel automatic renewal through the original purchase channel. Review the currency, applicable tax and full billing period rather than treating an annual commitment as one month's spending. Subscription and renewal rules
Keep the starting point and endpoint consistent
- Start from the same funding position. Both routes begin with existing cash, or both begin at your bank. Include their separate payment costs if one uses a card and the other a bank deposit.
- Match asset, currency and time. For example, AUD to BTC. Convert any USD quote properly before comparing it with AUD.
- Record total spending and net crypto. Save instant quotes and fees; for Pro save the weighted execution price, notional, fee asset and amount. Keep unfilled cash separate for partial orders.
- Match withdrawal plans. Both stay on-platform, or both reach the same asset/network wallet. Add the withdrawal minimum, charge and account availability when needed.
Check funding and withdrawals under the official fee categories, separately from trading-fee waivers. For a concrete banking route, read the Australian AUD comparison; for broader calculations, use the full-cost guide.
